50 Years of the State Building Code—Past, Present, and Future

The year 2022 marks 50 years that the Minnesota State Building Code has existed to regulate the safe use of buildings and structures. To commemorate this milestone, this presentation will discuss the development of the code and the code enforcement profession since its beginning in 1972; highlight the progress that has been made to date; discuss the future of the industry including technologies, codes, building materials, etc.

9:45–11:15 a.m. – Carbon Monoxide Incidents and Investigations

This ESi presentation will review basic, but important, information about the characteristics and production of carbon monoxide (CO). We will discuss the current rules, codes and standards requirements. Examples of CO incidents and investigations will be presented, highlighting the process used to determine the causes and the specific issues that led to an accumulation of CO within an occupied space.

12:15–1:45 p.m. – Building Failures: Reviewing Heating and Cooling Load Calculations

ESi will present on the important basics of reviewing heating and cooling load calculations. We will discuss some of the errors and omissions that can result in building failures.

2:00–3:30 p.m. – Building Failures: When Building Codes Aren’t Followed Trios

Engineering Systems Inc. (ESi) will present on various cases of cooling and heating system deficiencies for commercial systems. We will discuss a few common HVAC system components, potential failure scenarios related to these, and how various Minnesota Building Codes could have prevented, or minimized risk.

This presentation will provide a detailed review of how through and membrane penetrations in fire resistance rated assemblies are protected. It includes an in-depth review of fore stop systems, what materials and components make up UL Classified Firestop Systems, how to use the UL Product iQ online directory to locate code compliant assemblies, and how to ensure that the firestop is installed as a "complete assembly."
