Discussion Tables

The Education and Career Development Committee will be sponsoring lunch and dinner conversation tables for students and post-docs. There is no cost for these events, but space is limited and preregistration is required. During registration, attendees can choose up to three of their preferred topics to attend, and choices will be selected based on a lottery system. Attendees will be notified of their selected topic prior to the start of the conference.

Topics include the following:

  • Careers in biotech

  • Careers in teaching-focused institutions

  • Choosing a post-doc to meet your needs

  • Developing your online presence or "branding"

  • Getting tenure

  • How do I write my first solid draft of a manuscript?

  • How peer review works, using JVI as an example

  • How to network in your career

  • How to survive your first ASV meeting

  • Impostor syndrome

  • Personality and interpersonal relationships in the lab

  • Public speaking—tips for overcoming anxiety and rocking it out!

  • Time management and how to get my thesis finished

  • What is a post-doc that focuses on teaching?

  • When do I have kids in my science career?
