Maybe in an announcement you will want to refer your students to the Canvas syllabus. Or maybe in an assignment you will want to direct students to a group discussion that is tied to the assignment. The Canvas Content Selector is very useful tool at your finger tips for linking various course elements to each other in such a way that the links will copy forward properly during updates.

For a tutorial on how to link to other websites, articles, or journals, please see our tutorial on Adding External Links.

Step 1: Navigate to the Content

Go to the syllabus, page, assignment, quiz or discussion in which you wish to place your external link. Click on the Edit button on the top-right corner.

On a page, assignment, quiz, or discussion you can change the contents by clicking the Edit button on the top right.

Step 2: Add Content Link

  1. In the Rich Content Editor field, place your cursor where you want the link to appear.
  2. Select the drop down menu for links.
  3. Select Course Links
Place your cursor in the text editting field where you want the link to appear. Then click on the link drop-down menu in the tool bar on the top. Select "Course Links"

  1. On the Add menu, select the content type in the course you wish to add.
  2. Click on the box for the course content piece you wish to add. It should appear as named in the rich content editor field on the left.
A menu will appear on the right. Navigate to the course content type and click on the arrow to see the options. Then click the box with the content type you wish to link. It should now appear in the rich content editor field.

For usability reasons we strongly suggest making the text for the link the exact title of that content item.
