The qualifications listed below reflect the minimum qualifications a high school instructor must meet before applying to teach the UMN courses CI 3901: Exploring the Teaching Profession I and CI 3902: Exploring the Teaching Profession II

Licensure

CIS instructors must have a valid Minnesota Tier 4 teaching license or approved alternative

Experience and proficiencies (all required)

  • Three years of teaching experience including at least one year of teaching high school seniors.
  • Experience teaching linguistically and ethnically diverse students.
  • Evidence of knowledge of current issues (opportunities and dilemmas) in the field
  • Familiarity with technology that enhances teaching and learning
  • Familiarity with service-learning

Artifacts to include in application

  • When applying for CI 3901, include a recent artifact demonstrating your ability to design and deliver innovative pedagogy. These could include a unit plan, a detailed lesson plan, a demonstration of digital literacy, a student project with feedback/rubric, or video of a class interaction.
  • When applying for CI 3902, include a recent artifact demonstrating evidence of teaching for social justice, or attempts to disrupt the status quo of teaching and learning. These could include teaching that addresses intersecting identities (race, ethnicity, language, religion, gender, sexual orientation, ability), or equity work within the classroom.

Demonstration of advanced, relevant content knowledge (select one)

  1. Graduate degree in the field(s) of Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Leadership, or an education degree specific to a particular field, such as Math Education or Social Studies Education
  2. Graduate degree in any field plus 18 graduate semester credits in Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Leadership, or any education coursework specific to a particular field, such as Math Education or Social Studies Education
  3. Graduate degree in any field plus six equivalent experience examples from A through I, below
  4. Undergraduate degree in teaching or the content area of the teaching license, at least six graduate semester credits in Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, or discipline-specific education, and three equivalent experience examples from from A through I, below

Description of Equivalent Experience Options (only required if #3 or #4 is selected above)

A: Graduate credits in Education

Specifically in the fields of Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, or discipline-specific graduate coursework such as Math Education or Social Studies Education. These need not have been taken as part of a graduate degree program.

  • Three semester-length credits are considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to six times

If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, include a list of relevant graduate coursework. For each course include the title, where taken, and number of credits earned. Faculty will evaluate the courses you list for relevancy to the topics taught in the UMN course or to advanced topics in the same field. If the applicability isn’t obvious from the course title, please describe the relevance.

B: Discipline-specific professional development

Specifically in service learning, culturally and linguistically relevant teaching, equity-based teaching practices, or other relevant workshops, trainings, conferences, or seminars outside of district requirements.

  • 30 hours of professional development is considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to two times

If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, include a list of each professional development workshop, the sponsoring group or organization, and total hours. Refer to Faculty Guiding Questions #1: Discipline-specific professional development.

C: Fellowships or awards

This includes awards fellowships or awards from school, district, state, regional, national or international organizations for recognition of high school or undergraduate teaching.

  • Each fellowship or award is considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to five times

D: National Board Certification

Must be in the area of teaching license at the early adolescent through young adulthood developmental level.

  • Include a copy of your certification letter or certificate with your application
  • Certification is considered two experiences

E: Successful and effective teaching experience in a course leading to undergraduate credit

This may include dual credit, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or teaching undergraduates on a college or university campus.

  • Three years is considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to three times

If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, describe your teaching experience using tips from Faculty Guiding Questions, #3: Teaching of a course leading to undergraduate credit for students.

F: Discipline-specific leadership role in a secondary or postsecondary institution

Such as department chair, or in professional organizations such as local or state affiliates of professional organizations, including Education Minnesota.

  • Each distinct leadership role of at least one year is considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to three times

G: Presentations at relevant conferences

These may include local, state, regional, or national workshops or conferences such as MEA, ASCD, TESOL, MELEd, MCTCM, etc.

  • Each presentation on a distinct topic is considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to two times

H: Content or pedagogy trainer or coach; student teacher supervisor

  • Each year is considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to six times

If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, list and describe roles and responsibility using tips from Faculty Guiding Questions, #9: Experience requiring regular use of skills or content knowledge related to the field and/or to #7: Student teacher supervisor.

I: Demonstrated community engagement

Activity should be specifically around issues of diversity and social justice, including culturally relevant pedagogy and equity in education.

  • Each year of engagement is considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to three times
