The qualifications listed below reflect the minimum qualifications a high school instructor must meet before applying to teach the UMN course APEC 1101: Principles of Microeconomic or APEC 1102: Principles of Macroeconomics.
Licensure
CIS instructors must have a valid Minnesota teaching license or an approved alternative
Experience and proficiencies (all required)
- A minimum of four years of experience teaching high school economics, including at least two years of teaching economics to advanced students (for example, AP, IB, or dual-credit courses)
- Evidence of the following:
- A sustained commitment to economic learning and economic education
- Participation in professional activities that have expanded understanding of the application, content, and/or pedagogy of economics and applied economics
- Proficiency in technology that enhances teaching and learning in economics and applied economics
- For qualified applicants: Pass an exam about topics in the curriculum, administered by the faculty coordinator
Demonstration of advanced, relevant content knowledge (select one)
- Graduate degree in economics or applied economics or in economics education if coursework was inclusive of graduate-level content in economics and methods courses specifically for teaching economics
- Graduate degree in a related field (such as social studies education, education, or curriculum and instruction) and 18 semester-length graduate credits in economics or applied economics, as approved by the Applied Economics faculty coordinator
- Graduate degree in a related field (such as social studies education, education or curriculum and instruction) and six semester-length graduate credits in economics or applied economics, as approved by the faculty coordinator, plus four equivalent experience options from A through F, below
- Undergraduate degree in economics or applied economics and six semester-length graduate credits in economics or applied economics, as approved by the Applied Economics faculty coordinator, plus six equivalent experience options from A through F, below
Description of Equivalent Experience Options (only required if #3 or #4 is selected above)
A: Additional graduate credits in economics or applied economics
These need not have been taken as part of a graduate degree program.
- Three semester-length credits are considered one experience
- Can be applied up to six times
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, include a list of relevant graduate coursework. For each course include the title, where taken, and number of credits earned. Faculty will evaluate the courses you list for relevancy to the topics taught in the UMN course or to advanced topics in the same field. If the applicability isn’t obvious from the course title, please describe the relevance.
B: Discipline-specific professional development in economics or applied economics
Relevant professional development may include Advanced Placement trainings, International Baccalaureate workshops, Minnesota Council on Economics Education workshops, Council on Economics Education workshops, or other relevant workshops, trainings, conferences, or seminars. CIS workshops will be accepted for applicants who are provisionally accepted to teach the course.
- Forty-five hours are considered one experience
- Can be applied up to six times
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, include the number of hours of each professional development activity you want to apply toward meeting the qualifications. Refer to Faculty Guiding Questions #1: Discipline-specific professional development.
C: Textbook chapter(s), journal article(s), or scholarly work(s)
These should be of similar depth in the field of economics or applied economics, as deemed appropriate by the Applied Economics faculty coordinator.
- Each publication on a distinct topic is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, provide a photocopy of the cover(s) of the publication(s), and of the page(s) that lists your authorship. Describe the significance, particularly as it applies to the topics covered in the UMN course or to advanced topics in the same field.
D: Participation in nationally normed assessment activity
This must be related to work related to economics or applied economics, such as Advanced Placement test grading.
- Each year of participation is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, describe your participation using tips from Faculty Guiding Questions, #10: Participation in a nationally normed assessment activity related to the field.
E: Presentations at relevant conferences
These include local, state, regional, or national workshops or conferences such as CIS workshops or MCEE conferences. To be applicable, the presentation focus must be primarily on economics content, not teaching techniques or teaching resources related to economics.
- Three presentations are considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, list and describe presentations using tips from Faculty Guiding Questions, #5: Presentations.
F: Other activities and experiences that demonstrate understanding of economics or applied economics
These activities should be equivalent to graduate coursework, and as deemed appropriate by the Applied Economics faculty coordinator. For example, review economics curriculum for a publisher, or serve on an economics textbook review and selection committee.

- Can be applied up to six times
