The qualifications listed below reflect the minimum qualifications a high school instructor must meet before applying to teach the UMN course CI 1806: College Algebra through Modeling.

Licensure

CIS instructors must have a valid Minnesota teaching license or an approved alternative.

Experience and proficiencies (required)

Three years experience teaching mathematics at the level of Algebra II or higher.

Demonstration of advanced, relevant content knowledge (select one)

  1. Graduate degree in the field(s) of mathematics, statistics, engineering, physics, chemistry, mathematics education, curriculum and instruction, teaching and learning, or educational administration
  2. Graduate degree in any field and 18 graduate semester credits in field(s) of mathematics education or mathematics
  3. Graduate degree in any field and six equivalent experience options from A through I, below
  4. Undergraduate degree in mathematics, mathematics education, statistics, engineering, physics, philosophy with significant coursework in mathematics, mathematics education or logic, and eight equivalent experience options from A through I, below

Description of Equivalent Experience Options (only required if #3 or #4 is selected above)

A: Graduate credits in mathematics or mathematics education

These need not have been taken as part of a graduate degree program.

  • Three semester-length credits are considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to three times

If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, include a list of relevant graduate coursework. For each course include the title, where taken, and number of credits earned. Faculty will evaluate the courses you list for relevancy to the topics taught in the UMN course or to advanced topics in the same field. If the applicability isn’t obvious from the course title, please describe the relevance.

B: Professional development workshops in mathematics or statistics

These may include workshops such as Advanced Placement trainings in mathematics or statistics; International Baccalaureate workshops in mathematics or statistics, or other relevant workshops, trainings, conferences, or seminars, as determined by the CI 1806 faculty coordinator.

  • 45 hours of professional development is considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to three times

If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, include a list of each professional development workshop, the sponsoring group or organization, and total hours. Refer to Faculty Guiding Questions #1: Discipline-specific professional development.

C: Implementation of learning through a discipline-specific community of practice

This would include a significant personal practice to develop particular skills or understandings such as digital learning technologies, Project Lead the Way, or AVID, as determined by the CIS coordinator.

  • Each unique practice lasting at least one year is considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to three times

D: National Board Certification in Mathematics

Must be at the Adolescent and Young Adulthood level

  • Include a copy of your certification letter or certificate with your application
  • Can be applied up to one time

E: Successful and effective teaching experience in a course leading to undergraduate credit

These should be mathematics courses and may include dual credit, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or teaching undergraduates on a college or university campus.

  • Each unique course or higher ed institution, each with at least one year, is considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to three times

F: Discipline-specific leadership role in a secondary or postsecondary institution

Such as a secondary or postsecondary department chair or a leadership role in a state, regional or national-level professional organization in mathematics education.

  • Each distinct leadership role of at least one year is considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to three times

G: Presentations at relevant conferences

These may include local, state, regional, or national workshops or conferences such as Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), or American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC).

  • Each presentation of unique content is considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to three times

H: Content or pedagogy trainer or coach; student teacher supervisor

Must be specifically for mathematics instruction

  • Each year is considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to two times

If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, list and describe roles and responsibility using tips from Faculty Guiding Questions, #9: Experience requiring regular use of skills or content knowledge related to the field and/or to #7: Student teacher supervisor.

I: Teach using multiple languages or teaching internationally for at least a year.

  • Each unique experience of at least one year is considered one experience
  • Can be applied up to three times

If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, discuss the significance of the experience, particularly the relevance to the topics covered in the UMN course or to advanced topics in the same field. Indicate where, what, and for how long you taught, and the language(s) you used.
