The qualifications listed below reflect the minimum qualifications a high school instructor must meet before applying to teach the UMN courses CI 3101: Issues in Urban Education & CI 4121: Culture Power and Education
Licensure
CIS Instructors must have a valid Minnesota secondary or K-12 teaching license or an approved alternative
Experience and proficiencies (all required)
- Three years teaching experience, including at least one year at the high school level.
- Evidence of lived experiences and partnerships with community-based groups or student organizations (attending to course content that includes concepts of culture, power, and schools).
- Demonstrated knowledge or experience with community engagement, YPAR, or community/student organizations.
- Evidence of knowledge of current issues in the field of urban education
- Evidence of practice of asset-based pedagogies, such as culturally relevant pedagogy.
Demonstration of advanced, relevant content knowledge (select one)
- Graduate degree in the field(s) of Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, or an education degree specific to a particular field such as Math Education, Social Studies Education, or Ethnic Studies.
- Graduate degree in any field and 18 graduate credit semester hours in the field(s) of Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, or educational coursework specific to a particular field such as Math Education, Social Studies Education, or Ethnic Studies.
- Graduate degree in any field and six equivalent experience options from items A through K, listed below.
- Undergraduate degree in education or the content area of the teaching license, including six graduate credits in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, or discipline-specific education, plus five equivalent experience options from items A through K, listed below.
Description of Equivalent Experience Options (only required if #3 or #4 is selected above)
A: Graduate credits in related fields
Related fields include Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, or discipline-specific graduate coursework such as Math Education, Social Studies Education, or Ethnic Studies. These need not be taken as part of a degree program.
- Three semester-length credits are considered one experience
- Can be applied up to six times
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, include a list of relevant graduate coursework. For each course include the title, where taken, and number of credits earned. Faculty will evaluate the courses you list for relevancy to the topics taught in the UMN course or to advanced topics in the same field. If the applicability isn’t obvious from the course title, please describe the relevance.
B: Discipline-specific professional development
Especially workshops, trainings, conferences, immersive experiences, or seminars in culturally and linguistically relevant practices.
- 30 hours of professional development is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to six times
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, include a list of each professional development workshop, the sponsoring group or organization, and total hours. Refer to Faculty Guiding Questions #1: Discipline-specific professional development.
C: Published textbook, journal article or essay
May include similar scholarly or creative work in the field of Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Leadership or discipline-specific graduate coursework such as Math Education, Social Studies Education, or Ethnic Studies.
- Each publication is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, describe the significance of the work, particularly as it applies to the topics covered in the UMN course or to advanced topics in the same field. Include a link to the publication or provide, with your application, an abstract or copy that lists your authorship.
D: Fellowships or awards
This includes recognition from school, district, state, regional, national, or international organizations for recognition of high school or undergraduate teaching.
- Each fellowship or award is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times

E: National Board Certification in the area of teaching license.
Must be at the Adolescent and Young Adulthood level.
- Include a copy of your certification letter or certificate with your application
- Certification fulfills two options

F: Successful and effective teaching experience in a course leading to undergraduate credit
Including dual credit, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or teaching undergraduates on a college/university campus.
- Three years of experience is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, describe your teaching experience using tips from Faculty Guiding Questions, #3: Teaching of a course leading to undergraduate credit for students.
G: Discipline-specific leadership role in a secondary or postsecondary institution
Such as department chair, or in a professional organization such as local or state affiliates of professional organizations, including Education Minnesota.
- Each leadership role of at least one year is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times

H: Presentations at relevant conferences
These may include local, state, regional, or national workshops or conferences such as ASCD, TESOL, MELEd, MCTCM, etc.

- Can be applied up to two times

I: Content or pedagogy trainer or coach; student teacher supervisor
- Each year in the role is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, list and describe roles and responsibility using tips from Faculty Guiding Questions, #9: Experience requiring regular use of skills or content knowledge related to the field and/or to #7: Student teacher supervisor.
J: Regular employment in education with a core role in equity, diversity, belonging, or wellness.
- Each year in a role is considered two experiences
- Can be applied up to six times
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, discuss the significance of the experience, particularly regarding equity, diversity, belonging, or wellness. Indicate where, what, and for how long you had the role.
K: Demonstrated ongoing engagement in a community organization
Engagement to include addressing issues of diversity and equity, including culturally relevant pedagogy.
