The qualifications listed below reflect the minimum qualifications a high school instructor must meet before applying to teach the UMN courses GRK 1001: Beginning Classical Greek I and GRK 1002: Beginning Classical Greek II.

Licensure

CIS instructors must have a valid Minnesota teaching license or an approved alternative.

Experience and proficiencies (all required)

  • Be accepted to teach a UMN Latin course(s) through CIS;
  • At least one year experience teaching UMN Latin 3003: Intermediate Latin Prose and/or LAT 3004: Intermediate Latin Poetry prior to applying to teach UMN Greek course(s);
  • Have earned at least three semester credits of advanced coursework at the undergraduate or graduate level in ancient Greek literature. These credits can be in archaic, classical, Hellenistic, or imperial Greek; advanced coursework entirely in New Testament Greek is not accepted.
  • Have earned at least six semester credits of advanced coursework at the undergraduate or graduate level in ancient Greek culture; and
  • Possess a good active knowledge of the vocabulary, morphology, and syntax of classical Attic Greek, as written in Athens in 5th/4th centuries BCE.
