Instructor Qualifications HMNG 1011, 1012, 3021, 3022

The qualifications listed below reflect the minimum qualifications a high school instructor must meet before applying to teach the UMN courses HMNG 1011: Beginning Hmong I, HMNG 1012: Beginning Hmong II, HMNG 3021: Intermediate Hmong I and HMNG 3022: Intermediate Hmong II.

Licensure

CIS instructors must have a valid Minnesota teaching license or an approved alternative.

Experience and proficiencies (all required)

• Three years of experience teaching Hmong Romanized Phonetic Alphabet (RPA) script, preferably with experience teaching advanced middle school and/or high school students.
• Native or near native fluency in Hmong. Speech must be reasonably unaccented, generally grammatically correct, and employing appropriate vocabulary and register. Candidates who are non-native speakers of Hmong will demonstrate Advanced Low level skills based on ACTFL standards.
• Commitment to staying current with both pedagogy and content of Hmong RPA script through reading, ongoing professional development, and/or graduate coursework, as available.

Demonstration of advanced, relevant content knowledge (select one)

1. Graduate degree in the field(s) of Hmong, Hmong language instruction, world language instruction, or second language acquisition
2. Graduate degree in any field and 18 graduate credit hours in field(s) of Hmong, Hmong language instruction, world language instruction, or second language acquisition
3. Graduate degree in any field, such as education, plus six significant, relevant options from options A through N, below

Description of Equivalent Experience Options (only required if #3 is selected above)

A: Graduate credits in Hmong or related fields

May include credits in Hmong language instruction, world language instruction, or second language acquisition. Credits need not have been taken as part of a graduate degree program.

• Three semester-length credits is considered one experience
• Can be applied up to six times

If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, include a list of relevant graduate coursework. For each course include the title, where taken, and number of credits earned. Faculty will evaluate the courses you list for relevancy to the topics taught in the UMN course or to advanced topics in the same field. If the applicability isn’t obvious from the course title, please describe the relevance.

B: Professional development workshops

For example, discipline-specific workshops by CARLA, the American Association of Teachers of Hmong, CIS, or other relevant workshops, trainings, conferences, or seminars.

• 30 hours of professional development is considered one experience
• Can be applied up to six times

C: Published textbook, journal article or essay

May also include similar scholarly or creative work in the field of Hmong, Hmong language instruction, world language instruction, or second language acquisition.

• Each publication is considered one experience
• Can be applied up to two times

Include a link to the publication or provide, with your application, an abstract or copy that lists your authorship.

D: Experience requiring regular use of Hmong

Includes professional responsibilities such as interpreting or translating, or teaching in a weekend Hmong school. May include paid employment or volunteer work.

E: Participation in a discipline-specific community of practice

Such an undertaking is intended to develop particular skills or understandings.

F: Fellowships or awards for recognition of teaching Hmong or world language instruction

G: Participation in a nationally normed assessment activity

This entails work related to Hmong such as with ACTFL.

H: National Board Certification in World Languages

• Include a copy of your certification letter or certificate with your application

I: Years of successful and effective teaching experience in a course leading to undergraduate credit

These should be Hmong courses, including dual credit or teaching undergraduates on a college or university campus.

• Two years of teaching is considered one experience
• Can be applied up to three times

J: Discipline-specific leadership role

Qualifying positions include department chair at a secondary or postsecondary institution, or board member of a Hmong language organization or group, member of a language development team, trainer or facilitator for Hmong language-specific learning opportunities.

• Can be applied up to two times

K: Presentations at relevant conferences

These include local, state, regional, or national workshops or conferences on the subject of Hmong language, Hmong pedagogy, Hmong literacy, etc.

L: Serve as a content or pedagogy trainer or coach, or student teacher supervisor

To apply this option, Hmong or related content must be embedded in pedagogy.
