The qualifications listed below reflect the minimum qualifications a high school instructor must meet before applying to teach the UMN courses LAT 3003: Intermediate Latin Prose and 3004: Intermediate Latin Poetry
Licensure
CIS instructors must have a valid Minnesota teaching license or an approved alternative
Experience and proficiencies (all required)
- Three years of experience teaching advanced high school and/or college students;
- Experience teaching works by classical Roman writers (both prose writers and poets) such as Cicero, Caesar, and Vergil at an advanced high school level or intermediate collegiate level.
- Proficiency in reading and reciting Latin, and knowledge of Latin and classical Roman literature and culture, commensurate with guidelines laid out in the ACL/SCS "Guidelines for Latin Teacher Preparation" (2023).
- A good active knowledge of classical Latin vocabulary, morphology, and syntax, as written in Rome in the 1st centuries BCE and CE.
- A demonstrated commitment to staying current with both pedagogy and content through reading, ongoing professional development, and/or graduate coursework.
Demonstration of advanced, relevant content knowledge – select one
- Graduate degree in the field(s) of Latin or Classics
- Graduate degree in any field plus 18 graduate credit hours in Latin or Classics
- Graduate degree in any field plus all of the following:
- at least three semester-length graduate level credits in classical Latin literature,
- at least six semester-length credits of advanced coursework (undergraduate or graduate level) in classical Roman culture, and
- three equivalent experience options from A through J, below
- Undergraduate degree in Classics or Latin, plus all of the following:
- at least three semester-length graduate level credits in classical Latin literature,
- at least six semester-length credits of advanced coursework (undergraduate or graduate level) in classical Roman culture, and
- five equivalent experience options from A through J, below
Description of Equivalent Experience Options (if 3 or 4 selected above)
A: Graduate credits in the discipline
Specifically credits in Latin, beyond those required by the options listed above. These need not have been taken as part of a graduate degree program.
- Three semester-length credits are considered one experience
- Can be applied up to five times
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, include a list of relevant graduate coursework. For each course include the title, where taken, and number of credits earned. Faculty will evaluate the courses you list for relevancy to the topics taught in the UMN course or to advanced topics in the same field. If the applicability isn’t obvious from the course title, please describe the relevance.
B: Discipline-specific professional development
Specifically in Latin or Classics. For example, Advanced Placement training workshops; International Baccalaureate workshops in Latin; conventicula (summer programs in spoken Latin); NEH summer seminars in Classics or Latin; ACL summer institutes; annual meetings of CAM, WAFLT, CAMWS, or SCS; or other relevant workshops, trainings, conferences, or seminars.
- 30 hours of professional development is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to three times

C: Published textbook, journal article or essay in the discipline
May include similar scholarly or creative work in the field of Classics or Latin.

Include a link to the publication or provide, with your application, an abstract or copy that lists your authorship.
D: Fellowships or awards for recognition of teaching Classics or Latin
This includes recognition of high school or undergraduate teaching from school, district, state, regional, national, or international organizations.
- Each fellowship or award is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times

E: Participation in nationally normed assessment activity
Must be related to Latin such as Advanced Placement test grading.

F: Successful and effective teaching experience in a course leading to undergraduate credit in Latin
Including dual credit, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or teaching undergraduates on a college or university campus.
- Two years is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to three times

G: Discipline-specific leadership role
Such as department chair in a secondary or postsecondary institution, or in professional organization such as CAM, WAFLT, CAMWS, NCLG, ACL, ACTFL, SCS, or the Vergilian Society.
- Each leadership role of at least one year is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to three times

H: Presentations at relevant conferences
These may include local, state, regional, or national workshops or conferences such as meetings of CAM, WAFLT, CAMWS, ACL, ACTFL, or SCS.

I: Field test or review curriculum
This may include working for a publisher or serving on a textbook review and selection committee for a postsecondary or secondary institution.

J: Other options, including formal overseas programs
Examples may include the Classical Summer School at the American Academy in Rome or the summer programs of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens; participation in archaeological excavations in Europe, Africa, or the Middle East at sites relevant to classical antiquity.
