The qualifications listed below reflect the minimum qualifications a high school instructor must meet before applying to teach the UMN courses HIST 1307: Authority and Rebellion: American History to 1865 and HIST 1308: Global America: US History Since 1865
Licensure
CIS instructors must have a valid Minnesota teaching license or an approved alternative.
Experience and proficiencies (all required)
- Minimum of three years of experience teaching advanced US or world history courses to high school juniors and seniors, such as an Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or dual/concurrent enrollment courses through other institutions
- Commitment to active, ongoing learning in history as demonstrated by graduate coursework, professional development activities or participation in public history programs (including but not limited to those listed as equivalent experience options, below), designing and teaching advanced elective courses in history (including educational trips for students to historic sites in US or abroad), other relevant course or curricula development, etc.
- Experience with or an openness to multiple ways of knowing and to deploying innovative pedagogies
Demonstration of advanced, relevant content knowledge (select one)
- Graduate degree in history (US or world) or closely related discipline, as approved for each applicant by the faculty coordinator. Must be from an accredited institution. Related disciplines may include American studies, art history, ethnic studies (e.g., African American, Asian American) and selected subfields of anthropology, classics, cultural studies, English literature, geography, museum studies, political science and sociology
- Graduate degree in any field with 18 graduate credit hours in history or a closely related discipline, as approved for each applicant by the faculty coordinator. Degrees and graduate coursework must be from accredited institutions. Related disciplines may include American studies, art history, ethnic studies and selected subfields of anthropology, classics, cultural studies, English literature, geography, museum studies, political science and sociology
- Graduate degree in Education and undergraduate degree in history (or closely related discipline with substantial coursework in history) plus six semester-length graduate-level credits (or equivalent) in history or closely related discipline plus at least four equivalent experience options from A through I, below. Degrees and coursework must be from accredited institutions. Related disciplines may include American studies, art history, ethnic studies and selected subfields of anthropology, classics, cultural studies, English literature, geography, museum studies, political science and sociology
Description of Equivalent Experience Options (only required if #3 is selected above)
A: Graduate credits in history or a related field
Related fields include (but are not limited to) American studies, art history, ethnic studies (e.g. African-American, Asian-American), and selected subfields of anthropology, classics, cultural studies, English literature, geography, museum studies, political science, and sociology. Credits need not have been taken as part of a graduate degree program.
- Three semester-length credits is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to four times
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, include a list of relevant graduate coursework. For each course include the title, where taken, and number of credits earned. Faculty will evaluate the courses you list for relevancy to the topics taught in the UMN course or to advanced topics in the same field. If the applicability isn’t obvious from the course title, please describe the relevance.
B: National Board Certification in Social Studies-History at the Adolescence and Young Adulthood level
Current International Baccalaureate certification also fulfills the requirement.

C: Field test or review curriculum
Serve for at least six months on a History textbook review and selection committee for a publisher, secondary or post-secondary institution, or participation in nationally normed assessment activity related to History education, such as AP test grading.

D: Serve as a content or pedagogy trainer or coach, or student teacher supervisor

- Can be applied up to two times
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, list and describe roles using tips from Faculty Guiding Questions, #9: Experience requiring regular use of skills or content knowledge related to the field or to #7: Student teacher supervisor.
E: History pedagogy program participation
Participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities “Teaching American History” grant-funded program or equivalent national- or state-level History pedagogy program.
- Six months is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times
As part of your description, respond to Faculty Guiding Questions #1: Discipline-specific professional development. You do not need to note the number of hours.
F: Professional development workshops
Examples of workshops include the National Endowment for the Humanities summer workshops on History topics, Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History courses and seminars, National Humanities Center summer workshops, or other workshops and seminars with historical content at the graduate level offered by the Minnesota Humanities Council, the Minnesota Historical Society, or an equivalent institution.
- 30 hours of professional development is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times

G: Published textbook, journal article or essay
May include similar scholarly or creative work in the field of history, anthropology, political science, American Studies or law.
- Each publication is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, describe the significance of the work, particularly as it applies to the topics covered in the UMN course or to advanced topics in the same field. Include a link to the publication or provide, with your application, an abstract or copy that lists your authorship.
H: Presentations at relevant conferences
These include local, state, regional, or national workshops or conferences such as regional American Historical Association or similar historical conferences.
- Each presentation on a distinct topic is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times

I: Public history participation
Experiences such as serving as a museum docent, curatorial or archival assistant (experience must include training), exhibit development consultant, research assistant, contributor or designer, or contributor to digital humanities projects with history content and editorial oversight such as websites, blogs and podcasts.

- Can be applied up to two times
