When a serious performance issue or claim of misconduct arises, HR professionals are on the front lines, tasked with taking swift and appropriate action. Among their many responsibilities, HR is charged with conducting and documenting workplace investigations into complex issues, navigating the complexities of ever-changing employment laws, and keeping the employer out of court. Compliance can be challenging even for the most seasoned professionals—and the stakes are high.

This course provides a comprehensive exploration of the legal frameworks and investigative techniques essential for effective human resource management. Participants will gain a deep understanding of the legal issues that impact HR practices, including employment law, compliance, and ethical considerations. Additionally, the course will cover best practices for conducting workplace investigations and maintaining thorough documentation. Course Outcomes

At the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand “at-will” employment and discrimination theories.
  • Describe how to train front-line managers to improve job descriptions, set expectations, and document performance issues.
  • Articulate best practices for warnings, correction memos, discipline and termination.
  • Develop a structured approach about knowing when and how to investigate and draft professional findings.
  • Understand ADA requirements, FMLA, and legally protected absences.

For students pursuing the Human Resource Generalist Certificate, please note that this course will NOT count for credit towards completion of the certificate if you have already taken Legal Issues for Human Resources and/or Investigations and Documentation.
