About This Course

Black Music: A History of Jazz looks at the development what has been called “America's true classical musical form.” We will trace the roots of jazz from West Africa to its expressions in Hip-Hop. Because the course focuses primarily on social, economic, and political impacts on jazz, and vice versa, it is a perfect course for both the musician and the nonmusician.
