About This Course

This course introduces students to the major legal, ethical aspects and principles as applied in healthcare management. Topics include organization and governance of healthcare organizations, regulation, healthcare fraud and abuse, professional licensing and credentialing, compliance, quality and risk management, privacy and security of individually identifiable health information, healthcare decision-making, professional liability and malpractice. Other topics include legal and ethical issues surrounding healthcare technologies, medical research, and medical breakthroughs, consent to treatment, ethical dilemmas and inclusive excellence.

Dr. Ouk is a quality assurance manager in county public health in North Carolina. She has 20 years of experience in managing healthcare systems and business operations, healthcare security, quality improvement and assurance, and staff development. She is an SPSS innovative leader in delivering performance-driven management and staff training and development programs for revenue and profit growth. LaShonda has certification in HIPAA security (CHP), Six Sigma (Black Belt), healthcare quality (CPHQ), and health information technology (HIT). Her passion for working with adult learners is a strong foundation for her methodologies in teaching, training, and coaching.

Debra Rudquist is president of Amery Hospital & Clinic, a part of the HealthPartners family. Earlier healthcare leadership positions include system-wide cardiovascular service line executive for Fairview Health Services, and for Allina, executive director of ambulatory services, director of business development, and nurse manager. A registered nurse by background, Ms. Rudquist is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. She is a board member of the Wisconsin Hospital Association and the United Way of the St. Croix Valley, board chair for Kinship of Polk County, and a member of the Amery and Polk County economic development corporations.
