About This Course

The course is a core requirement in the Healthcare Management major and allows students to synthesize and integrate lessons from previous courses. It covers theory and practice of leadership skills needed for high-performing healthcare organizations in changing and turbulent times. It emphasizes a four-phase approach: environmental assessment, planning, strategy and innovation, and implementation/measurement. Students will be prepared to embrace innovation and lead business plans through to successful implementation. Students will learn to integrate a wide range of management tools through collaborative development of a strategic, ethical business plan and inclusive excellence.

Liv Billet is a healthcare administration professional with over ten years of experience working in major academic medical centers. She currently serves as assistant administrator for the Departments of Neurology & Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she supports faculty in areas such as human resources, contract management, career development, and strategic planning. She previously worked in academic medical simulation centers at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and Johns Hopkins University. In these roles, she built a strong foundation in healthcare operations, finance, human resources, and program and project management. Liv holds a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

Geoff Kaufmann, a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, is vice president for patient services of the Biomedical Division of the American Red Cross. He is the former director of planning and marketing for the University of Minnesota Hospital and the Minnesota Regent for the American College of Healthcare Executives. A nationally recognized authority in health marketing, Geoff has 45 years of experience in business development, strategic planning, marketing, new product development, and operations. His focuses have included physician-clinic-hospital networks, clinical and service outcomes, senior healthcare services, a wound care business, and diagnostic imaging centers.

Daniel McGinty is a healthcare consultant and expert witness. He served as president and CEO of Franciscan Sponsored Ministries in Manitowoc, WI, during 2016–18. Prior to that, he was executive vice president at Allina Health, overseeing the operations of 13 hospitals and emergency medical services and pharmacy. He has also worked at Duluth-based Essentia Health, where he was responsible for seven acute-care hospitals, four long-term care facilities, and 11 physician clinics. He served as president and CEO of Holy Family Memorial Health Network in Manitowoc and as an administrator at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

Dr. Gladys Ogunsegha is a product strategy and management leader with more than 15 years of experience driving successful product initiatives across diverse industries, including retail, financial services, higher education, and healthcare management. Her expertise is in translating complex business needs into actionable strategies, bringing competitive products to market, and effectively overseeing both emerging and mature product portfolios. At Optum, she provides strategic direction for a suite of solutions designed for both payers and providers, with a focus on reducing claim friction and optimizing administrative workflows. Her work is helping create a more efficient, accurate, and patient-centered healthcare experience. She is a Certified Professional Project Manager and is Pragmatic Marketing Certified. Outside her professional endeavors, she is passionate about reading, travel, and lifelong learning.
