About This Course
This course will introduce you to some of the major texts that are a part of the American literary canon. Thirty years ago, this syllabus would have looked very different than it does now, with the vast majority of the texts representing predominantly white male authors. While this version will retain many of these voices, it will also give you a much broader perspective as to the contributions that women, Native Americans, and African Americans made to the evolution of American literary traditions. Thus, you will not only have the chance to become familiar with well-known writers like Emerson, Thoreau, and Poe, but you will also be given an opportunity to read and engage with lesser-known authors like Mary Rowlandson and Phillis Wheatley.
