Tutorial I
Meeting Rooms 4–6
8:30, 10:15 a.m. – Power Markets 101
Speaker: Mark Duquaine, ACES
Many aspects of the bulk power system, including congestion management and capacity planning, are tied to markets where they exist. While every market is unique, this tutorial provides an overview of the MISO market, its different components, and how it practically impacts the operation and planning of the MISO bulk power system.
Tutorial II
Ballroom C/D
8:30, 10:15 a.m. – Energy Storage 201
Speakers: Chris Ruckman, Josh Tucker, Burns & McDonnell
When executing energy storage projects, there are many things to consider: choosing technologies, sizing, augmentation strategy, permitting, engineering, procurement, construction, and more. This presentation will cover challenges and knowledge gained from previous energy storage projects and what owners can do to help with their planning and execution. This tutorial will be a continuation of last year’s Energy Storage 101 tutorial to include some additional topics not discussed last year. The topics covered will be related to current trends in battery technologies, BESS sizing, augmentation strategies, fire detection and protection, standards, codes, and regulations, and AHJs (authority having jurisdiction) and permitting.
Tutorial III
Ballroom A/B
8:30, 10:15 a.m. – Transmission Design 101
Speaker: Duane Phillips, Utility Supply & Construction
This tutorial will walk through a detailed process flow of what detailed transmission line design requires and its design considerations. Major steps include: design criteria, load flow and system studies, interconnection studies, structure configuration, conductor selection, insulation selection, materials and hardware selection, foundation design, electrical studies, structure spotting, permitting support, and construction support.
Tutorial IV
Meeting Rooms 1–3
8:30, 10:15 a.m. – Testing, Commissioning, Diagnosing, and Troubleshooting Digital Protection Systems Communications
Speaker: David Bowen, David Dolezilek, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc.
Testing, commissioning, diagnosing, and troubleshooting protection systems requires traditional tools to verify electrical continuity, currents, and voltages. Digital protection requires the use of multimeters for traditional signals along with new methods to verify digital data flow over physical and virtual data circuits. This tutorial explains and demonstrates the digital tools and skills necessary to collect, analyze, and understand Ethernet packets in digital protection systems.
