Tutorial I

8:30 – Practical Demonstration of IEC 61850 Functionality and Use

As an introduction to the operation of GOOSE, station bus, and process bus systems, this tutorial provides an overview and demonstration of user actions to operate, monitor, test, and diagnose communications to understand and evaluate an IEC 61850 protection and control system.

8:30 – Best Practices for Battery Testing and Maintenance

This tutorial will cover the lead acid battery fundamentals, failure modes & prevention, and pros & cons of lithium-ion batteries. It will focus on the practical side of batteries. For maintenance activities, special focus will be given to the performance test presenting the different aspects to consider before and while running the test, as well as the analysis beyond the capacity result. For the ohmic testing, impedance measurements will be used to explain how to define baseline values, how to evaluate results from one single test, and trending the measurements or comparing them to the baseline value. In addition, battery ground faults will be discussed to show the implications on the DC system and to provide an explanation on how to locate them.

8:30 – Distribution Line Design 101

This session will focus on the building blocks of distribution line and address a few more advanced topics. The mechanical characteristics of conductors will be covered including sag and tension tables. Strength of tangent wood pole including strength limitations on poles greater than 55 feet tall. Basic information on guying will be discussed along with analysis of several unique guying application such as spread guys, double dead-end guying, and tap guys.
