HSM 4582/6582

About This Course

The practicum course is the final component of the Long Term Care Administrator's education. Minnesota’s Board of Licensure requires a minimum of 1,000 hours for persons without nursing home related experience. However, applicants with appropriate experience may have the number of hours reduced by the Board.

This is a transition course between classroom learning and its application at the executive level of management within a long term care organization. It, therefore, focuses on administrative behavior, skills, and performance. The course is designed to help the student intern understand the consequences of managerial actions and broaden leadership competencies for maintaining and enhancing the integrity of the organization.

A broad range of performance parameters are affected by management practices (e.g., employee morale, clinical processes, financial performance, regulatory compliance, quality of life for residents, customer satisfaction, and community/public relations). This course requires the student to undertake a formal practicum project that must be coordinated with: 1) the practicum site, 2) a preceptor who is a licensed nursing home administrator at the sponsoring organization, and 3) the course instructor.
