Policy Statement

This policy governs the use of academic holds (probation, suspensions, probation after suspension) applied to the records of Undergraduate Students in the College of Continuing & Professional Studies.

Academic Probation

  1. Students are placed on academic probation if their most recent term GPA or U of M cumulative GPA falls below a 2.00, and stay on probation until their most recent term GPA and their overall GPA are 2.00 or higher.
  2. While on probation, a student has a hold placed on their records and must meet with their academic advisor to register for courses.
  3. A student on probation will remain on probation until both their term GPA and cumulative GPA are above 2.00.

Academic Suspension

  1. Students are placed on academic suspension when at the end of their probation term (a semester), both the semester GPA and cumulative GPA are below 2.00.
  2. When a student is suspended, they are no longer enrolled in their program and cannot register for any University courses for at least one full academic year. If a student is already enrolled in courses for future terms, those classes are dropped and financial aid is removed for the term.
  3. Admitted and non-admitted CCAPS students that wish to appeal their suspension should follow the instructions provided in “Guidelines for Appealing an Academic Suspension,” below.

Application of Academic Progress Holds

If an academic progress hold is preventing a student from registering then the record must be reviewed before a hold is adjusted. Upon review:

  • Students on probation and active in a current term need to wait until grades are available for the current term before registering for another term. The review occurs automatically as soon as grades are available. Once grades are available, if a student is eligible to go off academic probation, they do not need to be referred for possible removal of their hold.
  • Students with an old probation hold who are not currently registered might be entitled to another term and entitled to register right away. They should be referred to their academic advisor.

Reason for Policy

CCAPS has a responsibility to identify students that are unlikely to complete their degree in order to preserve both the college’s and the student’s resources. Standardizing the eligibility criteria for academic probation and suspension allows for the consistent application of these holds and for students to clearly understand how, when, and why these academic holds are applied. This policy additionally outlines criteria required for accreditation established by the Higher Learning Commission.

Procedures

CCAPS conducts academic progress reviews for admitted CCAPS undergraduate students at the end of fall, spring, and summer semesters.

Admitted students should contact their academic advisor for answers to questions.
