For CIS Students Applying to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and Other Colleges and Universities

Whether you're heading to the University of Minnesota or another college or university, it's important to understand how your College in the Schools (CIS) credits will transfer and the individual steps you need to take. The following tips will help you make a smooth transition, and stay organized and informed as you plan your next academic move.

Tip #1: Send Your Transcript

  • Transferring to the U of M?
Your CIS courses are already part of your U of M record and transcript.

  • Transferring to another college or university?
You can send your official U of M transcript to that institution by ordering it through One Stop.

Tip #2: Use Transfer Tools

  • Transferring to the U of M?
Your CIS credits will transfer automatically to the U of M. Use Transferology to learn how college credits earned at other institutions will transfer to the U of M.

  • Transferring to another college or university?
Use Transferology and the UConn Early College Credit Transfer Database to get an idea of how your CIS credits (and other college credits) might transfer to other institutions.

Tip #3: Save Your Syllabus

A syllabus or detailed course outline is often required to submit a course for transfer credit evaluation at most institutions, so be sure to save a copy.

Tip #4: Review U of M Information

  • Review the U of M Transferring Credit web page for information about:
    • Transfer credit process
    • AP, IB, CLEP, A-Level, and Credit by Exam
    • MN Transfer Curriculum (MnTC)
    • Liberal Education Requirements (Don't miss the helpful Transfer Liberal Education Worksheet!)

  • Check majors.umn.edu to see which courses fulfill the liberal education requirements for your possible/planned major.

  • Check Sample Plans to see examples of semester-by-semester plans that include the courses needed to complete your degree requirements.

  • Contact the U of M Office of Admissions with your admissions-related questions:
    • Students with CIS credits only: Contact your appointed Freshman Counselor (search by high school)
    • Students with other college credits (PSEO, AP, IB, etc.): Contact the Transfer Specialists

Tip #5: Remember this General Rule of Thumb

The acceptance of transfer credits is always a decision made by the individual institution. Check with the colleges and universities to which you plan to apply to learn about their transfer credit policies.
