Instructor Qualifications for WRIT 1301

The qualifications listed below reflect the minimum qualifications a high school instructor must meet before applying to teach the UMN course WRIT 1301: University Writing

Licensure

CIS instructors must have a valid Minnesota teaching license or an approved alternative

Experience and proficiencies (all required)

• A minimum of three years of teaching experience including two semesters of experience teaching writing-focused courses (e.g. creative writing, college writing, AP Language, IB Language & Literature, etc. at the junior/senior level) or college level first-year writing or first-year seminars
• Demonstrated commitment to instruction that supports diverse learners and builds inclusive classroom environments
• Demonstrated ongoing commitment to professional development as evidenced by at least one of the following: graduate coursework in composition, pedagogy or related field, or participation in professional development related to teaching writing
• Preferred: TOEFL, ESL certification or other professional development experience in working with multilingual and other linguistically diverse writers (experience can include classroom, writing center, and/or community literacy work)

Demonstration of advanced, relevant content knowledge (select one)

1. Graduate degree in any field
2. Preferred: graduate degree in Writing Studies or a related field
