Why Earn a Long Term Care Management Certificate?

At the University of Minnesota, we educate leaders in the entire spectrum of healthcare professions, including administrators in long-term care. Our Long Term Care (LTC) Management Certificate is a flexible online program designed for students enrolled in undergraduate programs at the University of Minnesota and aspiring professionals working to obtain their senior living licensure. It uses state-accredited long-term care courses to prepare students to lead in the growing field of long-term services and supports.

Completion of this certificate can fulfill the course requirements you need to obtain Licensed Nursing Home Administrator (LNHA) and/or Assisted Living Director credentials in Minnesota. In order to obtain a license you need to complete additional state requirements, including a four-year degree for an LNHA. If you do not have a four-year degree, consider the Bachelor's of Applied Science in Healthcare Management with the Long Term Care Management Minor.

You could be in charge of:

  • nursing homes
  • assisted living facilities
  • independent senior housing
  • home care
  • hospices
  • other nonprofits that serve older adults and their families

Students enrolled in the UMN Healthcare Management undergraduate degree should enroll in the Long Term Care Management Minor if they are seeking licensure. Students from non-HM UMN undergraduate programs, HM students not interested in licensure, and UMD Healthcare Management students should enroll in the LTC Management Certificate.

The LTC Management Certificate is awarded by the UMN for students that have successfully completed at least 12 credits worth of courses in the LTC program. The completion of the certificate requirements does not award any state license. Students interested in licensure need to complete all requirements outlined by the state licensing board to qualify for a license.
