The qualifications listed below reflect the minimum qualifications a high school instructor must meet before applying to teach the UMN course EE 1701: Climate Crisis: Implementing Solutions and EE 1703, the associated laboratory
Licensure
CIS instructors must have a valid Minnesota teaching license or an approved alternative
Experience and proficiencies (all required)
- Three years of experience teaching high school juniors or seniors in STEM or environmental-related courses.
- General knowledge of wind and solar energy systems, electric utilities grid, batteries, fuel cells and energy-efficient lighting options.
Demonstration of advanced, relevant content knowledge (select one)
- Graduate degree STEM or environmental related fields;
- Graduate degree in any field plus 18 graduate credit hours in STEM or environmental courses;
- Graduate degree in any field plus six equivalent experience options from options A through M, below.
- Undergraduate degree with significant coursework in STEM, or environmental related coursework, plus seven equivalent experience options from A through M, below.
Description of Equivalent Experience Options (only required if #3 or #4 is selected above)
A: Graduate credits in STEM or areas relevant to the topics covered in the course
These need not have been taken as part of a graduate degree program.
- Three semester-length credits are considered one experience
- Can be applied up to six times

Faculty will evaluate the courses you list for relevancy to the topics taught in the UMN course or to advanced topics in the same field. B: Discipline-specific professional development
Specifically in STEM fields or topics covered in the course. Some options include Project Lead the Way training in Engineering; AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism or Mechanics training; AP Physics 1 and 2 trainings; Physics Teaching Resource Agents summer institutes or workshops; SciMathMn or Minnesota STEM Network conferences or trainings; PRISM workshops; Minnesota Association for Environmental Education trainings; Minnesota Association of Agricultural Educators conferences or trainings; IB physics training. Other relevant workshops, trainings, conferences, or seminars may be considered.
- 30 hours of professional development is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to four times

C: Published textbook, journal article, textbook chapter, or essay
May include similar scholarly or creative work in STEM areas, especially those related to topics covered in the course.
- Each publication on a distinct topic is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times

Include a link to the publication or provide, with your application, an abstract or copy that lists your authorship.
D: Professional experience requiring regular use of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics
May include paid employment or volunteer work.
- Each distinct experience is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times

E: Fellowships or awards
This includes awards from school, district, state, regional, national, or international organizations for recognition of high school or undergraduate teaching in any STEM area.

F: Participation in nationally normed assessment activity
Must be related to STEM areas, such as Advanced Placement test grading or serving as a National Board Certification assessor in science.

- Can be applied up to two times

G: National Board Certification
Must be received for Science at the Adolescent and Young Adulthood level.

H: Successful and effective teaching experience in a course leading to undergraduate credit
Must be in STEM area subjects through dual credit, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or teaching undergraduates on a college or university campus.

- Can be applied up to two times

I: Passing score (or better) on relevant subject matter tests
Including National Board of Professional Teaching Standards test in Science, GRE subject matter tests, or other relevant subject matter tests related to STEM.
- Each exam is considered one experience
- Can be applied one time
If including this option in your Description of Professional Experience, discuss the significance of the test, indicate the date taken and where taken. Provide documentation, such as a certificate or letter with your score.
J: Presentations at relevant conferences
These may include local, state, regional, or national workshops or conferences such as American Association of Physics Teachers, National Science Teachers Association, American Society of Engineering Education, Minnesota Science Teachers Association, Gopher State Physics Teachers, UMN Physics Force, or American Physical Society.
- Each presentation on a distinct topic is considered one experience
- Can be applied up to two times

K: Active participation in a professional STEM organization
Organizations may include QuarkNET, Project Lead the Way, AAPT, PhysTEC.

L: Content and pedagogy trainer or coach
Such as through Physics Teaching Resource Agents. To apply this option, content must be embedded in the pedagogy.

M: Field test or review curriculum
This may include working with a publisher or serving on a textbook review and selection committee for a postsecondary or secondary institution in a STEM field.
