Policy Statement

If a student was on track to receive a passing grade in their course but extraordinary circumstances prevented them from doing so, they may request an Incomplete Contract, or I grade, from their instructor. However, the decision to allow the student to complete the course after the end of the term is at the discretion of the instructor.

Approved contracts for an Incomplete must include the following:

  • Required completion date for Incomplete
  • Grade at the time of Incomplete
  • Specific assignments that are missing or that are a part of the Incomplete; including deadlines for each assignment as applicable

The completion date for all assignments listed in the Incomplete Contract should be no later than three weeks after the end of the class. An exception would be active military duty as per University policy.

If a student submits some, but not all, of the assignments outlined in the Incomplete Contract, the Incomplete Contract will be considered unfulfilled. The grade assigned will be the grade that was earned during the class term as specified on the Incomplete Contract.

“I” symbols will be changed to grades following the end of the Incomplete Contract, whether or not the student has met the conditions of the Incomplete Contract.

The grade assigned is final. No additional time or submissions will be allowed after the end date of an Incomplete Contract.

Reason for Policy

The University of Minnesota Policy on Grading and Transcripts provides minimum requirements for the assignment of an “I” (Incomplete) for classes in lieu of a final grade. The CCAPS Graduate Education Incomplete policy has a more stringent timeline than the University timeline.

Procedures

  • Requests for an extension to complete coursework and receive a temporary Incomplete “I” must be submitted at least five business days before the last day of class.
  • Students should request an Incomplete by submitting the Incomplete Grade Contract workflow.
  • If all elements of the Incomplete are not completed by the date stated in the Incomplete Contract, the grade at the end class will be awarded. This grade must be specified in the Incomplete contract.
  • Students should talk with their advisor with questions or for clarification of the policy.
