About This Course
Part I of the two-semester Statics/Materials/Structures curriculum. Provides an introduction to basic statics as it relates to structural analysis, including a fundamental understanding of forces, loads, shears, and moments applied to structural elements. These basic statics principles will be used to develop beam diagrams using load path analysis. The course also provides an introduction to building structural systems and their design and construction process. It will cover building loads and the methods of analyzing and designing structural elements such as beams and columns.
The students will learn about the path of loads applied to a building and about various structural materials, specifically wood and steel, used commonly to support these loads in building construction. This course provides an overview of the tools and techniques used by the structural engineer and basic procedures for choosing materials and member sizes for use in a building system.

Aaron is a Licensed Professional Engineer (MN, ND, SD) for Meyer Borgman Johnson. He works primarily on large renovations of existing structures in the aviation and science & technology industries. He is a project manager and design engineer for projects that use various structural materials (steel, concrete, timber, masonry). He has worked on complex structural renovations in coordination with architectural and construction requirements in facilities with ongoing operations, such as MSP Terminal 1. His previous experience includes design of bridges and earth retaining structures such as major roadway, light rail, and pedestrian bridges.

Morgan currently works as a licensed structural engineer at Meyer Borgman Johnson, a full-service structural engineering firm based in Minneapolis. She has a strong background and interest in multifamily housing and adaptive reuse. Morgan has worked as a project manager and design professional for all types of structural systems and is experienced with coordinating complex structural design requirements. She focuses on ways to achieve unified designs that are both constructible and reflective of the architect’s vision.
