Meet Marcus Fischer

It's a big year for Marcus Fischer. For starters, he's a senior at Spring Lake Park High School who is looking forward to milestone events in the year ahead — and to graduating in the spring.

He's also in his second year as a full-time Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) student at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities (UMN). Now in its 40th year, the PSEO program allows motivated high school juniors and seniors like Marcus to take classes at the University for both high school and college credit.

This means his school days are spent on the UMN campus, where, in addition to general studies, Marcus takes courses reserved for music majors through the School of Music. A euphonium player for his music studies, he loves playing the baritone as a member of the UMN Marching Band.

"Marcus has thrived in the UMN School of Music's PSEO program, demonstrating exceptional dedication, talent and musical leadership," shares Del Lyren, the associate director of admissions for the School of Music. "His contributions to our ensembles, his academic success and his endearing personality make him an outstanding representative of what our PSEO students can achieve."

So, what’s it really like to be a full-time college student while still in high school? In this ongoing short video series, Marcus takes us along for the ride, sharing his experiences, challenges and highlights from what is sure to be an unforgettable year.

Marcus: Hi, I’m Marcus and I’m going into my senior year of high school, but I’m also a full-time PSEO student at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

What exactly is PSEO? It stands for Post-Secondary Enrollment Options, and allows me to take college classes while I'm still in high school for free!

One of the coolest things I get to do as a PSEO student, is experiencing college life while I'm still in high school! For me, it means playing baritone in the Pride of Minnesota, the University of Minnesota’s Marching Band.

At the end of the summer, we kicked off the school year with Spat Camp, a week-and-a-half camp of Marching Band, where we learned fundamentals, got physically ready and prepared for the first game.

This is just one of the many things I get to experience as a student in PSEO. Thank you for watching.
