Policy Statement

This policy governs expectations and procedures for cancellation of low enrollment courses in the College of Continuing and Professional Studies. CCAPS Unit Leaders will establish course enrollment benchmarks in collaboration with the Sr. Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and monitor course enrollments prior to the start of term. Course and section cancellation decisions will be communicated to instructors typically no later than one to two weeks prior to the start of term and advising staff will communicate with admitted students to find course alternatives in support of continued degree progress.

Enrollment Benchmarks

Each unit has established the following enrollment benchmarks to ensure robust learning and instructional efficiency. Experiential learning courses such as internship, practicum, and capstone courses are exempt from these benchmarks.

Undergraduate Education

All course sections, regardless of enrollment capacity, have a minimum enrollment benchmark of ten students.

Graduate Education

  • Courses with a capacity of 20 have a minimum enrollment benchmark of seven students.
  • Courses with a capacity of 25 have a minimum enrollment benchmark of eight students.

Minnesota English Language Program

Courses have a minimum of enrollment benchmark of six students.

Procedures

The appropriate Unit Leader will identify courses to be cancelled, communicate with instructors and appropriate unit staff, and delegate an appropriate advisor to proactively contact CCAPS students whose degree and course progress may be adversely impacted by the course cancellation. The advisor will work with the student(s) to identify alternative course options toward degree completion.
