Lead Data-Informed Decisions and Optimize Workplace Workflows
As organizations increasingly rely on data-informed decision-making, working professionals must know how to navigate information pipelines without needing a background in complex software engineering. The Data Analytics Certificate provides a practical foundation for rising data analysts aiming to advance into data analytics roles or strengthen analytical work in their current position. Building on participants’ existing familiarity with spreadsheet tools, the certificate prepares learners for more advanced, structured analytics and reporting to support business operations. The program bridges that gap by focusing heavily on workplace application and operational efficiency.
Over four sequential courses, participants shift from understanding foundational database structures to building interactive dashboards and executing predictive programming workflows. Rather than training learners to build complex enterprise infrastructure, this certificate prepares coordinators, analysts, supervisors and operations specialists to support implementation across teams. Participants gain a grounded understanding of data health, data governance guardrails and responsible AI use. By the end of this certificate, individuals will be equipped to collaborate effectively with technical teams, optimize departmental workflows and communicate the business value of data initiatives clearly to stakeholders.
The University of Minnesota Data Analytics Certificate offers a flexible path to building practical data analysis and reporting skills. You may complete the full certificate or take individual courses based on your goals and interests.
What You'll Learn
- Workflow mapping and database navigation: interpret relational database structures, schemas and tables to assess data readiness before analysis begins.

Format
Each multi-week course blends synchronous and asynchronous learning to provide flexibility for independent project work while still building real-time connections with instructors and fellow participants via Zoom.
The synchronous portion—live class sessions designed for hands-on practice and support—includes a 60- or 90-minute Zoom meeting each week. During these meetings, participants join discussions and workshop assignments and projects together. This time helps learners build relationships with peers and the instructor, while also allowing for more personalized guidance.
The asynchronous portion—coursework that can be completed on each participant’s own schedule—may include recorded video lectures, readings, and assignments such as discussion posts or projects. Each week, there will be designated deadlines to help learners stay on track.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a background in programming or computer science to enroll?
No. This certificate is explicitly designed for working professionals, rising analysts and spreadsheet-proficient staff who want to advance their skills without shifting into heavy engineering or software development. The curriculum builds on your existing familiarity with basic spreadsheet tools (like Excel or Google Sheets), introducing SQL and Python step-by-step through a practical, workforce-focused framework.
How will these courses help me if I already use Excel every day?
While spreadsheet tools are excellent for baseline data tracking, this certificate prepares you for more advanced, structured analytics and reporting. You will learn how to transition to SQL for safer and faster data extraction, Power BI for building interactive, cross-functional dashboards, and Python for automating reproducible workflows. These tools allow you to handle larger datasets and reduce manual spreadsheet errors.
I am not a data scientist. How will this certificate apply to my current operational role?
The program focuses entirely on workplace application and operational efficiency rather than high-level enterprise strategy or model deployment. You will gain the practical skills needed to map workflows, track daily departmental trends, evaluate project impact and translate raw data into clear visual insights that support day-to-day business operations.
Do employers offer tuition reimbursement for data analytics training?
Yes, many organizations provide reimbursement for professional development that enhances business operations. Because this certificate focuses on building advanced, structured analytics and reporting skills to support business operations, it is a strong candidate for employer funding. By building skills that directly improve operational efficiency and reduce the risks associated with business transformation, you can demonstrate clear business value and ROI to your leadership team.
Are the courses taught by industry professionals with on-the-ground experience?
Our instructors are industry professionals with extensive experience in the areas they teach. Many have years and sometimes decades of practical background and use real-world case studies and examples to enrich the learning experience.
Will I earn a credential?
Yes. Learners who complete all required courses will earn a Data Analytics Certificate from the University of Minnesota. In addition, participants will receive a digital badge that can be shared on LinkedIn, professional profiles and resumes to showcase their commitment and achievement.
Can organizations enroll teams in this certificate together?
Yes. The Data Analytics Certificate works well for teams navigating technology rollouts, standardizing reporting methods or scaling data-driven workflows together. Organizations can use the course sequence to build a shared technical vocabulary, align on data governance guardrails and establish cross-functional implementation readiness.
