Course Content

We offer the curriculum provided in the SHRM Learning System in partnership with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), which is designed by global subject matter experts and covers the entire SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge™ (SHRM BoCK™). The course includes application exercises, workbooks, and online resources to develop specific competencies and decision-making skills. Key topics to be covered include:

  • Applicants must show that they have worked in an HR role for more than 1,000 hours within a calendar year, which equates to one year of experience
  • HR experience can be in an exempt or nonexempt capacity
  • SHRM membership is not required to attain the new SHRM Certification.

To sit for the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP), you must complete an application through through SHRM's website

Tests are administered through Prometric; find available dates and locations on Prometric's website.

SHRM created three avenues by which SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP credential holders can earn PDCs: Advance Your Education, Advance Your Organization, and Advance Your Profession.

What do I earn from the University of Minnesota and SHRM?

Participants earn certificates of completion from the University of Minnesota and the Society of Human Resource Management, as well as 3.6 Continuing Educational Units (CEUs). The University of Minnesota strongly encourages students to successfully prepare for the exam using the guidelines provided. To obtain your certificates and CEUs, you must attend at least 70 percent of the class, complete the required out-of-class assignments, and complete 70 percent of the pretests, posttests, and the final exam.
