About This Course
Introduction to Construction Management begins by providing students with an overview of the industry itself: the type and size of projects, where the industry has come from, and where it appears to be heading. It discusses the roles and responsibilities of the individuals involved in the projects, from both a participant perspective as well as in the context of an industry-related company.
The course defines the project and construction sequence, building systems, and materials, and examines project scheduling and delivery methods. Additionally, construction documents, including drawings and specifications, are introduced. Students taking this course conduct research into construction materials, sustainability, and topics of their own personal interest.

Projects include landmark facilities in commercial, corporate, education, and government sectors, such as the LRT stations on the University of Minnesota East and West Bank campuses. Her experience in both design and construction disciplines spans nearly 25 years. Stephen Hauser’s professional experience in the construction industry encompasses projects in 16 states, plus the District of Columbia. He is presently a project manager for a big-box retailer, and worked previously for four different general contractors, a specialty subcontractor, and an architect/engineering firm. Stephen’s responsibilities have included conceptual estimating, marketing, project engineering, and both project and general management. Notable projects on which he has served include the Minneapolis Convention Center and a variety of projects at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
