Why is the study of sexual health so important?
Dr. Kristen Mark, Director of Graduate Studies, Sexuality Programs, and Joycelyn Elders Endowed Chair for Sexual Health Education, University of Minnesota Medical School
Dr. Kristen Mark: It's such a taboo subject, sex. And that's really a shame and something that we really work to push against.
And that's where we come in as sexuality and sexual health professionals. And I think that that is something that makes the field really exciting and really engaging and is what keeps me going every day in that I know that I'm making a direct difference in people's lives and that in and of itself gets me really engaged in the topic area.
I've always seen it as an overall part of people's health, like sexual health is health, and not everybody sees it that way. And I think we need more people who do see it that way, who see sexual health as an overall part of health to go into our field, because there's just not that many of us and we need more people to be working toward normalizing and destigmatizing and really allowing for us to digest that information about sexual health and how to live a whole sexual life to the public in ways that that are meaningful and that make a difference.
