Webinar

Being great at your job is often what earns you a leadership opportunity. However, the skills that make you a strong individual contributor are rarely the same skills that make you an effective leader.

In this practical webinar, we learned how to navigate one of the most critical career transitions: moving from doing the work yourself to achieving results through others. We explored the mindset shifts, communication habits and leadership behaviors that help emerging leaders build credibility, delegate effectively and increase their influence. Whether you are preparing for a promotion or newly stepped into a leadership role, you'll leave with actionable strategies to lead with greater confidence and clarity.

In this session, we discussed:

  • shifting from task ownership to people leadership.
  • transitioning from reactive doing to strategic thinking.
  • building trust and credibility with your team.
  • delegating effectively without micromanaging.
  • navigating the dynamics of leading former peers.

Key Takeaways

The Predictable Leadership Gap

Under pressure, new leaders often retreat to familiar habits, such as taking work back, solving problems directly or micromanaging. Although stepping in can create short-term efficiency, over time it results in team dependency, bottlenecks and frustration.

Three Primary Responsibilities of a Leader

  • Providing clarity: Leaders must define direction, priorities and success standards while maintaining alignment with senior management.
  • Building capability: Leaders need to equip team members to learn, practice and take complete ownership of their responsibilities.
  • Creating conditions: Leaders must listen intentionally and apply "Q-TIP" (Quit Taking It Personally) to control emotional and defensive reactions to feedback.

Five Essential Leadership Shifts

  1. From Task Ownership to People Leadership: Shift focus from personal task completion to enabling team members to produce outcomes. Leaders should evaluate success weekly by asking what became clearer, stronger, easier or more possible for others.
  2. From Reactive Doing to Strategic Thinking: Balance immediate urgent tasks with long-term strategic priorities. Leaders should operate at three distinct altitudes: ground level (execution), balcony level (observing patterns) and horizon level (anticipating future trends).
  3. From Proving Yourself to Building Trust and Credibility: Prioritize curiosity over certainty, recognizing that credibility rests on competence, character and consistency. Cultivate psychological safety so team members can admit mistakes, ask questions and respectfully disagree.
  4. Delegate Differently: Approach delegation through five clear conversations: outcome, why, boundaries, authority and check-in. Avoid micromanagement by reflecting on whether stepping in is genuinely necessary or caused by personal impatience or discomfort with struggle.
  5. From Former Peer to Leader: Direct communication is vital when transitioning to manage former peers. Address the changed dynamic openly and express a commitment to fairness, transparency and respect.

Action Plan and Audience Insights

  • Leaders should identify stress-induced habits and select one or two targeted "leadership upgrades" to practice consistently over seven to 30 days.
  • To handle leadership that forces reactivity, leaders should analyze systemic bottlenecks and communicate directly with supervisors regarding competing priorities.
  • Individual contributors seeking leadership growth before promotion can build strategic thinking skills by joining committees, leading projects or contributing to cross-functional initiatives.
