Opinion: Aging Is a Privilege — We Should Treat it as Such

MN Daily columnist Vivian Wilson shares her thoughts about the societal pressures "placed on us to never age," which she finds confounding. "Aging is a gift and privilege we are not all afforded, and our disdain for aging seems backward in its logic."

As part of her investigation, she spoke with Rajean Moone, faculty director of Long Term Care Administration programs and associate director for policy in the Center for Healthy Aging and Innovation, who offered that disdain for older adults — and aging — are often reflected through ageism.

“There are research studies that show that ageism impacts our cognitive performance,” Moone said. “It impacts our health, it impacts our life expectancy and even affects us economically. In 2018 the U.S. economy lost $850 billion through age discrimination, which is a particularly pervasive form of ageism. I think it is really important for us to recognize that older adults are often marginalized in our society, and their contributions are devalued.”
