To maintain course completion tracking, quiz scores, and proper formatting, Rise 360 content should be added using Canvas's native SCORM tool rather than uploading and expanding .zip files directly inside Canvas Files.

Step 1: Access the SCORM Tool in Canvas

  1. Open your Canvas course.
  2. Look for SCORM in the left-hand navigation menu.
  3. If SCORM is not visible: Go to Settings > Navigation, drag SCORM up into the visible items list, and click Save at the bottom of the page.

Step 2: Upload Your Exported Package

  1. Click SCORM in your course menu.
  2. Click the blue Upload button in the top-right corner.
  3. Choose the exported Rise .zip file from your computer.

Important Note on Upload Delays: Canvas processes SCORM packages using a background extraction queue. The progress bar may pause at 100% or take several minutes while the Canvas backend validates the file. Do not refresh or upload the file again while it is processing. If the page freezes, navigate to another course tab (like Home) and click back into SCORM to check if the file has appeared in the list.

Step 3: Select How to Import the Content

Once uploaded, Canvas will prompt you to select an Import Type from the dropdown menu next to the file.

Import as Graded Assignment

Creates a Canvas Assignment and adds a column in the Gradebook. Passes quiz scores, completion statuses, and points directly to Canvas.

Import as Ungraded Assignment

Creates an Assignment item without a Gradebook point value. Tracks completion internally within the SCORM engine, but does not affect final grades.

Mandatory orientation steps, syllabus reviews, or practice materials.

Import as Page

Embeds the Rise package inside a standard Canvas Page rich content editor. No score or completion data is reported back to Canvas.

Optional readings, supplementary guides, or visual content.

 

Note: Once selected and saved, the import type cannot be edited. If you need to change the type later, delete the package from the SCORM tool and re-upload it.

 

Step 4: Add the Content to Your Course Structure

For Graded / Ungraded Assignments

  1. Navigate to Assignments in your course menu to locate the imported package.
  2. Click Edit Assignment Settings to update the title, point value, assignment group, and due dates.
  3. Recommended: Scroll to Submission Type (which defaults to External Tool) and check Load This Tool In A New Tab to avoid third-party cookie-blocking issues in modern web browsers.
  4. Click Save & Publish.
  5. Go to Modules, click the + icon in your desired module, select Assignment, and add the item.

For Page Imports

  1. Navigate to Pages in your course menu.
  2. Locate the newly created page housing the embedded SCORM content and click Publish.
  3. Go to Modules, click the + icon in your desired module, select Page, and add the item to your learning sequence.

Caution: Do Not Unzip or Upload Directly to Canvas Files

Do not extract (unzip) your Rise 360 package or upload its individual contents into Canvas Files.

  • Broken Links & Caching: Extracting and embedding “index.html” directly from Canvas Files causes link degradation and stale caching whenever the course material is updated.
  • Loss of Tracking & Security: Hosting package files manually bypasses the Canvas LTI integration, breaking completion tracking, quiz reporting, and cross-origin security permissions in modern browsers.
  • Correct Method: Always upload the entire, untouched .zip file using the native SCORM tool in your course menu to ensure proper playback and data reporting.
