Marco Antonio Bosse
Marco Antonio Bosse is an international student studying at the University of Minnesota through Minnesota English Language Program (MELP). He comes to the U from Pato Branco, a small city in the southwest region of Brazil. We sat down with Marco for a Q&A session to learn more about him and his experience with MELP.
Tell us a little bit about Brazil.
Brazil is a huge country, and each region has its own culture and traditions. This is great because you can try so many different things, such as food and dancing, without leaving the country. When Brazilians want to have some fun, they go to the beach for the day, or they’ll travel into the bigger cities.
Why did you choose to study English at the University of Minnesota?
The Brazilian government was my sponsor for an education program I was a part of called Science Without Borders. This program gave me the opportunity to study abroad. My sponsor picked the University of Minnesota for me, and I am so thankful for that.
What surprised you about the U of M?
The University of Minnesota surprised me in all aspects. The first thing that surprised me was the campus structure. The architecture is incredible, and the students have such a great atmosphere for studying. I was also surprised by the bus transportation system. It’s a lifesaver, especially if you have classes on the St. Paul campus on snowy days. Another great thing that surprised me was the UMN spirit. I don’t know how to describe it in words… it’s just magical. It’s the kind of feeling that every single student seems to have about the U. I really feel like I’m part of “the team” here. By that I mean that I’m #UMNproud, and of course I am a huge fan of Goldy!
What do you like about MELP?
My time in MELP was awesome. My instructors and classmates were so amazing! I really made great friends here! MELP was like my second family, and all the staff were helpful as I adjusted to school and the culture. I really enjoyed the small trips that we made and the events that we attended, such as 4th of July parade.
MELP made me feel more confident and ready to start academic classes. Thanks to the program, I was eager to interact with my classmates and professors.
What do you do for fun at the U of M?
When I was attending U of M, I did many things for fun, like hanging out with my friends, going to the Mall of America, watching baseball and football games, exploring downtown Minneapolis, and ice skating, which I loved because we don’t have that in Brazil! To feel the ice through the blades of my skates was a very unique experience for me.
What is the best part about studying English?
English has always been very important and has played a special role in my life. The experience of having a conversation with someone using a foreign language is amazing. When I communicate in English, I feel so connected with the world; I see that I am not alone. I realize that I have endless opportunities to learn more about other cultures and understand different perspectives.
What are your plans for your career and the future?
I want to find a job within my major, which is plant science. I’d also like to be able to use my English skills on the job in communications. I do not think I would be happy and satisfied with my job if I wasn’t able to talk with people from all over the world.
