The Master of Professional Studies in Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) prepares counselors to treat clients with mental health, substance use, or co-occurring disorders. The IBH program provides a strong theoretical and practical foundation in integrative treatment modalities, clinical skills, professional and ethical responsibilities, and client advocacy.

The internship is an experience where you can apply the knowledge and skills learned in your courses in a clinical setting. You will receive close supervision from both site and faculty supervisors, participate in formal on-campus clinical supervision meetings, and actively engage in weekly required postings and practice assignments.
Upon completion of the internship, you will undergo a formal written and oral evaluation.
A minimum of 2 credits (440 hours) of ADDS 5996 must be completed near the program's midway point.
Take one or two courses totaling 4 credits from the following:
- ADDS 5996 Internship in Substance Abuse Counseling (1−4 credits)
- IBH 6996 Internship for Integrated Behavioral Health (1−4 credits)
Talk to your IBH advisor about internship options and the specific requirements for the licenses you wish to pursue.
Elective courses must relate to counseling, human development, or human services, or must enhance your understanding of mental health, co-occurring disorders, substance use disorders, or human behavior within a broader context. Obtain approval from the Director of Graduate Studies to take electives outside the IBH.

Portfolios offer a way for you to reflect upon crucial components of your counselor training experience and how diverse activities and insights have contributed to your professional development.
You will work on your portfolio throughout the IBH program. It will be used periodically as a tool for reflection, evaluation, and feedback.
If you are interested in counseling youth, this specialization will add competencies in psychopathology and resilience, and application of theory and research to meet the needs of youth, families, and communities. As part of the specialization you will also earn a graduate minor in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health.
This optional specialization requires additional coursework beyond the IBH degree’s minimum credits and a youth-focused internship. Please be aware that legal convictions may disqualify you from internship and clinical practice. Anyone seeking this specialization will be required to pass a background check before internship.
During the 2016 legislative session, the Commissioner of Human Services was directed to reform the treatment continuum for individuals experiencing addiction disorders. In addition, the Minnesota Department of Human Resources decreed 2017 to be the year of addiction treatment transformation.
This will result in a greater need for trained professionals who are up to date on the latest counseling techniques and research. “Currently, there is a shortage of addictions practitioners in the state of Minnesota,” says Debra Wamsley, Director of Graduate Studies. “Our degree effectively prepares future clinicians to successfully practice in this rapidly changing landscape.”
- According to the US Department of Labor and Statistics, substance use counseling and mental health counseling are two of the fastest-growing professions.
- Both areas are projected to grow much faster than average for all occupations over the next decade.
- Insurance companies are increasingly providing reimbursement for counselors as a less costly alternative to psychiatrists and psychologists.

Admission to the IBH program is competitive and all applications are reviewed holistically by committee to ensure a good fit for academic success. Notification of admission decisions is made within four to six weeks after the application deadline.
The following items are required for admission:
- a bachelor's degree from an accredited post-secondary US institution, or its foreign equivalent
- an undergraduate GPA of 3.0*
The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is not required.
* In exceptional circumstances, promising applicants with lower GPA may be considered for the program. An explanation for GPA, and evidence that academic success at the graduate level is achievable, must be addressed in the application (extenuating circumstances).
- First, access the online application.
- All required application materials must be electronically attached to your application.
- Professional statement: Two to three pages, double-spaced, should address pertinent aspects of your background and academic qualifications and should demonstrate a strong interest in mental health and substance use disorders, including documentation of any relevant training or employment.

- Extenuating Circumstances statement: If your undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, please provide an explanation.
Letters of Recommendation
Two letters of recommendation are required. Letters should be solicited from individuals who can provide a candid assessment of your abilities (including strengths and weaknesses), personality, character, and potential for graduate-level academic success and professional achievement.
Unofficial transcripts or academic records for each institution (even if you didn’t receive a degree) should be uploaded directly to the online application. International students should also upload an English translation if the transcript is not in English. If possible, make sure the institution has put your name on the transcript/record.

Submit a current resume or CV.
The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is not required.
A nonrefundable application fee must be paid on submission.
You may be able to transfer up to 24 credits of graduate-level coursework completed prior to admission, with approval of the Director of Graduate Studies.
Transfer coursework requirements:
- taken at the University of Minnesota or another accredited institution;
- completed at the graduate level and listed on a graduate transcript;
- earned a grade of B or higher;
- completed no more than five years before admission to the program.
The IBH program does not accept transfer credits that were completed at the undergraduate level and/or listed on an undergraduate transcript.
If your native language is not English, please submit scores from the TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS English proficiency examination. Read more about required scores.
- Required TOEFL scores are 84 or above, with section scores of at least 21 on writing and at least 19 on reading.
- Required IELTS score is 6.5, with section scores of at least 6.5 for both writing and reading.
- Required MELAB score is 84.
International students interested in the Integrated Behavioral Health program should contact the International Student and Scholar Service for information on visa status.
Credit courses taken before admission may be applied toward this degree. You can take a graduate-level course before being admitted if:
- the course is graduate-level (4xxx-level or above), and
- you register for credit as a nondegree graduate student and pay graduate-level tuition.
Follow these steps to register:
- Download and submit a Registration Request for Graduate Credit for Nondegree Students Form. Registration for nondegree students is not available online.
- Send the form to the department offering the courses for authorization. This form must be used each term until you are admitted to a program.
- Upon authorization, the department offering the graduate course will forward the form to the registrar or provide you with further instructions.
- You will receive confirmation and payment instructions by email.
